The Orbea Carpe is a lightweight electric city bike series built for Canadians who want a real commuter e-bike without hauling around a 25 kg machine. Every Carpe shares the same proven core: a custom-tuned Shimano EP6 mid-drive motor with 85 Nm of torque, a 420 Wh battery hidden inside a closed downtube, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, a carbon fork and pedal assist up to 32 km/h. Every Carpe is also certified to the UL 2849 safety standard for e-bikes. With reported weights between 17.7 and 20.9 kg depending on the model, the Carpe is light enough to carry up the steps of a walk-up, lift onto a car rack or roll into a condo elevator.

Because the Shimano EP6 is a mid-drive motor, it measures how hard you pedal and delivers power through the cranks, so steep bridge approaches, Prairie headwinds and loaded grocery runs feel close to flat ground. Orbea's Urban Active Geometry keeps you upright with a clear view over traffic, while the Twin Glide Flex double seat tube and carbon fork soak up potholes, streetcar tracks and spring frost heaves. A trapeze frame makes it easy to step over, and four frame sizes fit riders from 5'0" to 6'9".

Orbea Carpe 10: the low-maintenance commuter. The Carpe 10 pairs a Gates CDX belt drive with a Shimano Nexus 5-speed Di2 internal hub. There's no chain to clean or lube, Auto Mode shifts for you, and the sealed drivetrain shrugs off slush and road salt, which makes it the strongest choice for year-round riding. It ships fully equipped, including the rotating space-saving stem, folding pedals and an ABUS frame lock.

Orbea Carpe 20: the fully equipped everyday e-bike. The Carpe 20 keeps the Carpe 10's complete commuter kit but uses a Shimano CUES 9-speed chain drivetrain with a wide 11-46t cassette, rated for up to 98 km per charge. It comes ready to ride with a 20 kg-rated rear rack, alloy fenders, a 235-lumen Supernova Mini 2 headlight, a taillight integrated into the seatpost, daytime running lights, an SP Connect phone mount and a USB-C port. Its standard chain parts can be serviced at almost any bike shop in Canada.

Orbea Carpe 25: the lightest Carpe. The Carpe 25 uses the same motor, battery and 9-speed drivetrain as the Carpe 20, but ships without the rack, fenders and headlight, bringing its reported weight down to 17.7 kg. Pirelli Cinturato All Road tires add grip on gravel paths and rough city streets. It suits riders who travel light or already own the accessories they like.

Whichever model you choose, the Carpe grows with you. Orbea's 252 Wh Range Extender mounts on the bottle cage to raise total capacity to 672 Wh for long days, and accessory options include a 30 kg-rated RR-02 rear rack, a 10 kg front carrier and trailer compatibility. That combination of a branded mid-drive, hydraulic brakes, a sub-21 kg weight and real upgrade paths is what separates the Carpe from heavier, hub-motor commuter e-bikes that look similar on paper.

The Shimano EP6 is a mid-drive motor with 85 Nm of torque, the same maximum torque as Shimano’s flagship EP8, custom-tuned by Orbea for city riding. Because it sits at the cranks and senses how hard you pedal, power comes in smoothly from a standing start at a red light and builds as you climb, so bridge approaches, headwinds and a loaded rear rack feel close to flat ground.

Pedal assist runs up to 32 km/h, and Walk Assist helps you push the bike up ramps and out of parking garages. You can fine-tune how the motor responds in each assist mode with Shimano’s E-TUBE PROJECT app, and on the Carpe 10 the EP6 pairs with the Shimano Nexus Di2 internal hub for automatic shifting, so you’re always in the right gear when you pull away.

Shimano EN500

The Shimano EN500 is a compact, all-in-one display and assist switch in one small handlebar unit, so you can change assist modes without taking your hand off the bar. Its 1.4-inch LCD shows your assist level, estimated remaining range, trip distance and total odometer, plus your current gear and Auto mode on the Carpe 10’s Di2 drivetrain, and the same button switches your lights on and off.

At about 40 g, it keeps the cockpit clean and uncluttered. On the Carpe 10 and 20, pair it with the integrated SP Connect phone mount for navigation and ride tracking on your phone, or upgrade to Shimano’s larger EN600 cycle computer, which Orbea offers as an option.

Which Orbea Carpe should I choose: the Carpe 10, 20 or 25?

Choose the Carpe 10 for the lowest-maintenance drivetrain, the Carpe 20 for a fully equipped commuter with a conventional 9-speed chain, and the Carpe 25 for the lightest bike if you plan to add your own accessories. All three share the same 85 Nm Shimano EP6 motor, 420 Wh battery, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes and lightweight alloy frame. The real differences are the drivetrain (Gates belt with a Nexus Di2 internal hub on the 10, Shimano CUES 9-speed chain on the 20 and 25) and how much equipment comes installed.

Is the Orbea Carpe an electric bike?

Yes, the current Orbea Carpe 10, Carpe 20 and Carpe 25 are all electric city bikes powered by a Shimano EP6 mid-drive motor and a 420 Wh integrated battery. Orbea previously sold a non-electric hybrid under the Carpe name, so if you see an older Carpe listed without a motor or battery, that's the earlier acoustic model, not this e-bike series.

Is the Orbea Carpe a good commuter e-bike compared with cheaper options?

Yes, the Orbea Carpe is one of the strongest lightweight commuter e-bikes in its class because it combines a branded mid-drive motor, hydraulic disc brakes and a weight under 21 kg. Many lower-cost commuter e-bikes use rear hub motors, mechanical brakes and frames well over 25 kg, which feel less natural on climbs and are much harder to carry. On the Carpe 10 and 20, the rack, fenders, Supernova lights and phone mount are already included, so there's less to add after purchase.

Is the belt-drive Orbea Carpe 10 worth the step up from the Carpe 20?
